Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover your counselling services in British Columbia?

As a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC, Qualifying), my services may be covered by certain extended health benefit plans. However, because I currently hold a "Qualifying" designation, coverage is not guaranteed and depends entirely on your insurance company and the details of your specific plan.

I highly recommend contacting your insurance provider directly before booking to verify if your plan covers "CCC, Qualifying" therapists.

Is there any sliding scale fee?

Yes, I reserve some spots for those in need and for those managing financial constraints. So, let's discuss it during your complimentary session.

Do you offer counselling in Portuguese?

Yes. I am a fully bilingual clinical counsellor and offer sessions in both English and Portuguese (Brazil). Many immigrants and expats find it significantly easier to process complex emotions, cultural adaptation, and trauma in their native language.

What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Luciana offers both, and we will discuss them with you during the first sessions. In practice, many mental health professionals seamlessly blend both approaches depending on your individual needs.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, they generally differ in depth and duration:

Counselling is usually short-term and focuses on resolving specific, current challenges—such as stress, grief, or life transitions—using practical problem-solving and coping strategies.

Psychotherapy is typically long-term and explores the deeper, root causes of chronic mental health issues, trauma, or ingrained behavioral patterns to achieve profound emotional healing.

What is the difference between a Counsellor CCC and a Psychologist?

A Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) holds a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology and focuses on talk therapy, emotional regulation, and mental health support. A Psychologist typically holds a Ph.D. and can formally diagnose mental health conditions and conduct psychological testing. Both provide highly effective, evidence-based therapy.

What therapy approaches do you use?

I use an integrative, evidence-based approach tailored to your specific needs. Depending on your goals, our work together may draw from:

Attachment & Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT): Explores how early relationships shape your current connections, helping you heal past wounds and build more secure, fulfilling bonds. Explores how deep emotional bonds shape your world.

Person-Centred Therapy: Provides a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental space where you lead the session, fostering self-discovery and autonomy.

Narrative Therapy: Helps you separate your identity from your problems, empowering you to rewrite the stories and beliefs that shape your life.

Mindfulness: Grounding practices that help you stay present, connect with your body, and regulate your nervous system in moments of stress. Also, it honors the wisdom of your body and releases stored trauma/stress at a pace that feels safe for you.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): Provides practical tools for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and navigating intense feelings without becoming overwhelmed.

Trauma-Informed Care: To build resilience and safety in the face of complex challenges.

How long is a typical counselling session?

A standard individual counselling session is 50 minutes long. I also offer a free 30-minute initial consultation. This gives us a chance to meet, discuss your needs, and ensure my approach is the right fit for you before beginning formal therapy.
